vida notes | the autumn equinox: an invitation to reset. 🍂

september 23, 20263 min read

The autumn equinox marks the transition from summer into fall—a moment when day and night are approximately equal in length.

For centuries, cultures around the world have used seasonal transitions like this one to pause, celebrate the harvest, express gratitude + prepare for the season ahead.

There is no scientific evidence that the equinox itself “resets” your hormones, nervous system, energy or body.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t use it as an intentional moment to reset ourselves.

the science of a seasonal reset.

Our brains respond to cues.

A birthday.

A Monday morning.

The beginning of a month.

A new year.

Research in behavioral science describes something called the fresh start effect: meaningful temporal landmarks can create psychological separation from our past behavior + make it easier to reconnect with our goals.

The equinox can be one of those landmarks.

And the practices commonly associated with an equinox reset—spending time outside, mindfulness, slow breathing, gratitude, reflection + intentional goal-setting—can each support well-being independently of the equinox itself.

So you don’t need to believe the universe is doing something to you today.

You can simply decide to use the changing season as a reminder to check in with yourself.

your autumn reset. 🍂

Take a few quiet minutes.

Breathe slowly.

Then ask yourself:

what am I grateful for?

What deserves to be acknowledged before I rush toward the next thing?

what am I ready to release?

A habit. An expectation. A commitment.
A version of yourself you’ve outgrown.

You don’t have to carry everything into the next season.

what do I want to cultivate?

How do you want to feel this autumn?

What deserves more of your attention?

What is one small practice that would support that intention?

Write it down.

make it tangible.

Humans have always used objects, rituals + environments to give meaning to transitions.

Light a candle. Take a walk outside. Make tea. Journal.

Practice a few minutes of breathwork.

If crystals are meaningful to you, choose one to represent your intention—not because we have evidence that the crystal itself changes your physiology, but because a physical object can become a reminder of the intention you’ve chosen.

For example:

smoky quartz → grounding + release

moonstone → transition + new chapters

clear quartz → clarity + intention

carnelian → energy + creativity

The symbolism can be meaningful without needing to become pseudoscience.

one season at a time.

You don’t need an elaborate ritual.

You don’t need to reinvent yourself.

And you certainly don’t need another wellness checklist.

Sometimes a reset is simply noticing:

something is changing. what do I want to leave behind? what do I want to bring with me?

Then taking one small, intentional step in that direction.
