vida notes | PCOS has a new name: meet PMOS
you may know it as PCOS—polycystic ovary syndrome.
as of May 2026, it has a new name:
PMOS—polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome.
why the change?
because PCOS was never really just about “cysts” on the ovaries.
PMOS is a complex condition involving multiple hormone systems, metabolism + ovarian function, with effects that can extend to metabolic health, skin, reproductive health + mental health.
and despite its old name, you do not need to have ovarian cysts to have PMOS.
in fact, what have traditionally been called “polycystic ovaries” are not actually abnormal ovarian cysts. the misleading terminology was one of the major reasons behind the name change.
symptoms + signs can include:
- irregular or absent periods
- irregular or absent ovulation
- acne
- increased facial or body hair
- scalp hair thinning
- metabolic changes + insulin resistance
- difficulty becoming pregnant
PMOS is heterogeneous—which means it doesn't look the same in everyone. its clinical features can be reproductive, metabolic + psychological.
and it's common.
PMOS affects approximately 1 in 8 women worldwide—more than 170 million people. yet delayed diagnosis and dissatisfaction with care remain common.
the new name is more than a change in terminology.
it's a better reflection of what this condition actually is—and hopefully another step toward:
better recognition → earlier diagnosis → more comprehensive care.
